As part of a Caribbean region tsunami exercise, VITEMA will activate the tsunami sirens territorywide at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The exercise, titled Caribe Wave/LANTEX 15, simulates an 8.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Panama that generates a tsunami and, consequently, a widespread tsunami warning.
Siren locations are:
St. Thomas — Cyril E. King Airport, Crown Bay, Griffith Park, Enid Baa Library, Long Bay, Mandela Circle, Megan's Bay Beach, Coki Point Beach, Frydenhoj, Red Hook.
St. John — Cruz Bay, Coral Bay.
St. Croix — Cramer's Park, Divi Carina Bay, Canegata Ball Park, Christiansted Government Parking Lot, Sion Farm, William's Delight, Fisher St. at Frederiksted, Frederiksted Government Parking Lot, Sprat Hall.
The VI Department of Education will conduct school evacuation drills throughout the week. Evacuation drills will be held:
- 9 a.m. Tuesday, Eudora Kean High School, St. Thomas,
- 10 a.m. Wednesday, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, St. Thomas.
- 9 a.m. Friday, Arthur A. Richards Junior High School, St. Croix.
- 1 p.m. Friday, Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School, St. Croix.
Motorists traveling in these areas are advised to proceed with extreme caution.
Other exercise participants include the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, VI Police Department, the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands, Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, Department of Finance, American Red Cross, Frederiksted Health Center, Tropical Shipping, Crown Bay Marina, WICO, and several private sector businesses.
